Introducing Facebook Save

It seems like every other week Facebook announces another update, from changes in Facebook business page ratings to users no longer needing to like a page in order to access its content (stay tuned for a blog post on this soon). And now the social media giant is introducing the Facebook Save feature. Facebook officially made the change in July 2014, according to a Facebook Newsroom post by Daniel Giambalvo. Saving on Facebook allows you to bookmark links, events, music, movies, places, TV and more. You can save once and view your saved bookmarks anywhere, on any device, once on your Facebook account.
“Every day, people find all sorts of interesting items on Facebook that they don’t have time to explore right away,” Giambalvo says. “Now you can save items that you find on Facebook to check out later when you have more time. You can save items like links, places, movies, TV and music.”
The items you save are private unless you choose to share them with friends, Giambalvo says.
A How To Guide
Here’s how to get started with Facebook Save!
- To save something you see on your News Feed, click on the down arrow on the righthand corner of the post, video or photo you want to save.
- To save a place, click on the drop-down menu at the top of the page on the right of the “Message” button. Click on the three dots and then “Save.”
- To save an event, click the button that looks like a blue ribbon and then hit “Save.”
- Important note: Facebook Support says you can’t save posts or photos that don’t already have links.
- View your saved items at any time by clicking on the Save link on the left hand side of Facebook when on a computer. If you’re on your cell phone, click on the “More” tab. Your saved items list should be organized by category. For example, TV, books and events. You can also type in the URL to access.
- Swipe right on each item to share with friends or move to your archive.
- You’ll also see reminders of saved items in your News Feed so you don’t forget.

How Facebook Stacks Up
A Marketing Land article by Martin Beck discusses how Facebook is not the first to provide saving, “read-it-later” services. He says Instapaper and Pocket are popular for users that want to save and store reading lists in one place that can be accessed online or off.
Christina Bonnington discusses in a Wired article that she will probably use the new Facebook Save feature in a similar way to Twitter favorites and will save things she wants to access in the future but not necessarily share with the world. But Bonnington says Facebook is lacking in one aspect.
“Unlike some other bookmarking services, Facebook doesn’t offer any differentiation between links that you’ve clicked on or read, and those you haven’t,” Bonnington says.

But Beck says Facebook has one thing other bookmarking services don’t have, 1.28 billion active users! Although Facebook Save is reminiscent of online popular review sites like Yelp and Foursquare where you can save bookmarks and come back to them, Facebook does have the advantage of being a social media giant with way more users than any other site. It remains to be seen how Facebook will square off against the competition!
Facebook Save and Search
Facebook Save also has serious implications for local search and SEO, as you can now save when looking up business locations or map directions on . This could come in handy for both customers and business owners, as now you can like a Facebook place and save the location when looking for a business online. Beck believes Facebook Save will be a boon to local businesses.
Facebook Places is organized by city, and you can both like and check-in to a place on Facebook now, similar to checking in on Foursquare or Yelp. Let’s say you’re looking for or looking up the address and contact information to a new restaurant. Facebook Save and Facebook Places now give local businesses the chance to be found through organic search, and their information will now be able to be bookmarked for future use or purchases.
